Deadly Strike on a Residential Neighbourhood
A Russian drone hit residential buildings in Chernihiv on the morning of 26 August, killing a 39-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter. Another child, aged 14, was wounded and taken to hospital. The strike ignited a fire in a private home where the woman and her daughters were; the building was almost completely destroyed by the blaze.
Rescuers discovered the bodies of the mother and her young daughter under the rubble during search and recovery efforts.
"The attack wounded a 14-year-old child and, unfortunately, killed two people — a woman and a four-year-old," said Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, head of the Chernihiv City Military Administration. The National Police of Ukraine said the older child had been hospitalised with injuries.
Aftermath and Emergency Response
The blast also set fire to outbuildings and a nearby shop. Police and emergency services are working at the site, documenting the destruction, recording damage and collecting evidence. The incident was reported by the Chernihiv City Council and by the head of the city's military administration on Telegram.
This attack is another sign of escalating violence in the region: just two days earlier, on 24 August, Russian forces used a drone to hit an apartment building in central Chernihiv, injuring 20 people, including three children.
The deaths underline the growing danger to civilians in Ukrainian cities as strikes on residential areas become more frequent. Rescue teams and local authorities are still working to clear the aftermath and assist the victims, while the continued tension in Chernihiv demands attention from both Ukrainian and international organisations.
The tragic incident in Chernihiv is not an isolated event, as the region continues to face escalating threats from aerial attacks. Just days earlier, a separate drone strike resulted in injuries to a child and sparked fires across the area.
