Moldova's Airspace Violated by Russian Drone for 23 Minutes

Російський дрон перебував у повітряному просторі Молдови протягом 23-х хвилин.

Russia Launches Massive Attack on Ukraine

On May 13, 2026, during a large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine, an unmanned aerial vehicle crossed into Moldova's territory. The drone entered from the direction of Mohyliv-Podilskyi and remained in Moldovan airspace for at least 23 minutes. At 4:00 PM, it breached the border between Mohyliv-Podilskyi (Vinnytsia region) and the village of Sauța (Ocnița district). The National Army's Air Operations Service confirmed the incursion.

Local residents spotted the drone over Bălți at 4:05 PM. It then headed toward the Ungheni district, with tracking systems picking it up again at 4:19 PM. By 4:23 PM, the device was detected near the town of Cărpineni in Hîncești district before continuing southward. In response, authorities temporarily closed airspace over northern and central Moldova. Officials urged citizens to report any suspicious objects by calling 112.

Neighboring Countries React

Meanwhile, Poland scrambled fighter jets and helicopters, while ground-based air defense systems were placed on heightened alert. In Ukraine, explosions were reported in Lutsk, Kolomyia, and Khmelnytskyi as a result of the massive strike. Three people were injured in Khmelnytskyi, while in the Rivne region, an attack on a residential building killed three and wounded six others.

It is worth noting that as of April 2026, Moldova had recorded over fifty airspace violations since the start of the full-scale invasion. At least nine drones or explosive-laden debris have been found on Moldovan soil. In March 2026, a Russian kamikaze drone with an unexploded warhead was discovered near the Ukrainian border.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated: 'Russia repeatedly violates the country's sovereignty and endangers the lives of its citizens.'

This incident underscores the escalating conflict in the region, raising alarms in neighboring nations like Moldova and Poland. The breach of Moldova's airspace highlights emerging challenges to regional security, demanding stronger defensive measures. International reactions to these events could shape the trajectory of the war in Ukraine and its neighbors, particularly regarding military and humanitarian support.

This recent violation of Moldova's airspace highlights the escalating tensions in the region, particularly as Ukrainian drone capabilities expand into previously secure areas of Russia. As the conflict intensifies, understanding the broader implications of these developments becomes crucial for assessing regional security dynamics.
