Drone Incident in Romania Raises Security Concerns
A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into an apartment block in the Romanian city of Galați late on May 28, after its trajectory was altered when Ukrainian air defenses intercepted it. The attack caused injuries and sparked a fire. Romania’s President, Nicușor Dan, placed full blame on Russia, stating that Ukraine bore no responsibility for the event.
The drone changed course after being struck by Ukrainian air defense systems, likely over the town of Reni. Speaking to Digi24, President Dan explained:
“When the drones were flying over Ukrainian territory, some were shot down, and one of them—probably hit near Reni—shifted its path and headed toward Galați.”He noted that the drone carried at least 30 kilograms of explosives, a figure supported by investigators. The impact ignited a fire in a top-floor apartment, leaving two people injured; medical teams treated them at the scene.
Romania Responds and Seeks NATO Support
Romanian military forces were unable to intercept the drone due to the extremely short window between detection and impact—just four minutes. President Dan emphasized:
“Russia is unquestionably responsible for this situation.”In the aftermath, members of the Social Democratic Party in Romania’s Senate called for the immediate resignation of acting Defense Minister Radu Mîrutea, citing the Galați incident where the drone struck the roof of a ten-story residential building.
Bucharest is actively consulting with allies to enhance its defensive capabilities. The issue of supplying Romania with additional anti-drone equipment is set to be raised at the upcoming NATO meeting. Dan stated:
“At the next NATO session, we will discuss the equipment Romania needs. This is a long-term process that Romania is pursuing to continue protecting itself.”
