Russian Drone Strikes Regional History Museum in Konotop During Overnight Attack

Атака безпілотника в Конотопі завдала шкоди регіональному музею історії вночі.

Strike on the Konotop Museum of Local History

In the early hours of May 20, 2026, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle targeted the Oleksandr Lazarevsky Konotop Museum of Local History, situated in the city of Konotop, Sumy Oblast. The attack damaged the roof, entrance doors, interior partitions, ceilings, floors, and every exhibition hall within the museum. Fortunately, the museum’s repository remained intact, and the most valuable artifacts scheduled for evacuation had already been removed beforehand.

The assault also led to a tragic loss of life: a 94-year-old resident of a five-story apartment building struck in the same attack was killed. Additionally, 11 people sustained injuries, most of whom were elderly. The damage extended beyond the museum, affecting the city hospital, where windows were blown out, as well as other residential buildings and administrative offices in the vicinity.

Restoration Efforts Underway

Museum staff are currently conducting a thorough assessment of the damage and relocating property that was inside the building.

“Following this, a decision will be made on the next steps for preserving the structure,” said Ivan Verbytskyi, First Deputy Minister of Culture.

As of today, work continues on packing and transferring the remaining museum collections to a secure location. The museum’s repository survived the attack, and the most prized items from the first two evacuation phases had already been moved out in advance. This situation highlights the critical need to protect cultural heritage during wartime.

This incident underscores the dangers that cultural institutions face during armed conflicts, as they are frequently targeted amid military operations. The loss of historical sites and artifacts can have lasting repercussions for a nation’s cultural identity and legacy, making preservation efforts especially vital in times of instability.

The recent attack on the Konotop Museum is not an isolated incident; similar assaults have targeted cultural institutions across Ukraine. For instance, a recent strike on the Skovoroda Museum in the Kharkiv region has raised concerns about the safety of cultural heritage during ongoing conflicts. This highlights the urgent need for protection measures to preserve invaluable historical sites from the ravages of war.
