Russian Gas Carrier Struck in Mediterranean; Moscow Blames Ukrainian Drones

Корабель з російським газом зазнав атаки в Середземному морі; Москва звинувачує в цьому дрони з України.

Drone Attack Targets Russian Gas Tanker

A Russian liquefied natural gas carrier, the Arctic Metagaz, came under attack in the Mediterranean Sea on March 3. The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed the incident, alleging that Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels launched the strike from the coast of Libya. The vessel, which had departed from Murmansk, was near Maltese territorial waters at the time of the attack. The Mediterranean has become an increasingly active theater in the wider conflict, with both sides targeting maritime assets.

All 30 crew members, who are Russian nationals, were successfully rescued. According to the Russian ministry, coordinated efforts by Maltese and Russian rescue services ensured their safe evacuation. It is notable that the Arctic Metagaz is under sanctions from both the United States and the United Kingdom, part of efforts to restrict Russia's energy revenue.

Regional Tensions Escalate

The tanker's last known position was recorded off the coast of Malta on March 2. In a related development, two other tankers in Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet,' the Kairos and the Virat, were reportedly damaged near the coast of Turkey. These incidents point to a rising pattern of maritime attacks targeting Russian-linked shipping.

The assault on the Arctic Metagaz occurs against a backdrop of escalating military activity and heightened tensions across the Mediterranean region. Given the area's critical role in global energy logistics and strategic interests, such attacks carry significant implications for international security and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The targeting of sanctioned vessels could further complicate Russia's efforts to circumvent international restrictions on its energy exports.
