Russian Shelling Damages Kherson Regional Museum and Historic M-30 Howitzer Protected by UNESCO

Внаслідок обстрілів російських військ постраждало об'єкт культурної спадщини – Музей Херсонської області, а також унікальна гаубиця М-30, яка охороняється ЮНЕСКО.

Damage to Kherson and Its Cultural Landmarks

The Russian bombardment of Kherson has inflicted significant damage on the Kherson Regional Museum of Local Lore, a historic architectural monument dating back to the early 20th century that is safeguarded by UNESCO’s "Blue Shield" program. The attack also harmed a 122mm M-30 howitzer displayed prominently in the square in front of the museum. According to museum staff and law enforcement officials, the building suffered over 35 impacts from various weapons.

The 122mm M-30 howitzer stands as a monument commemorating Kherson’s liberation from Nazi German forces during World War II. For decades, it has served as a symbol of remembrance and respect for those who fought for peace. Museum representatives expressed their sorrow over the recent damage:

“The M-30 howitzer in front of our museum is a unique monument remembering World War II. It has long symbolized Kherson’s freedom from Nazi occupation and honored those who defended peace. This time, however, enemy Russian shrapnel has severely damaged this veteran artillery piece. The weapon, once a symbol of victory over Nazism, is now scarred by Russian fire.”

The Toll on Cultural Heritage

During the Russian occupation of Kherson, 23,000 artifacts were removed from the local history museum. Additionally, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine reported that over a thousand valuable items were stolen from the Kherson Art Museum. These losses highlight the devastating impact of conflict on the region’s cultural heritage and historical preservation efforts.

The recent shelling not only causes physical destruction but also threatens the collective memory and identity of Kherson. The theft of cultural treasures during occupation violates international humanitarian laws designed to protect heritage in times of war. These events emphasize the urgent need for increased global cooperation to safeguard historical artifacts and monuments amidst ongoing conflict.
