Kyrylo Budanov Subjected to Trial in Absentia by Russia
A Russian court has ordered the detention of Kyrylo Budanov in absentia, accusing him of employing prohibited methods and means of warfare. This ruling was made behind closed doors. Budanov, the former head of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate and current chief of the Presidential Office, has been repeatedly targeted by Russian judicial actions conducted in his absence. Earlier, in April 2023, he was placed under a similar arrest warrant concerning terrorism charges, with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) alleging his involvement in orchestrating an attack on the Crimean Bridge.
Expanded Charges and Official Responses
In December 2023, Budanov was again arrested in absentia, this time accused of responsibility for 104 terrorist acts within Russian territory. These allegations form part of a broader Russian campaign aimed at Ukrainian military leaders. Under the same charges, the Russian Investigative Committee has also indicted:
- Mykola Oleshchuk, commander of the Ukrainian Air Force,
- Oleksii Neizhpapa, commander of the Ukrainian Navy,
- and other senior figures within Ukraine's military command.
Additionally, Russia has placed Budanov on lists labeling him as a terrorist and extremist, officially declaring him wanted.
