Russian Soldier Suspected of Killing Six in Kharkiv Region Placed in Custody Without Bail

Військового Росії, підозрюваного у вбивстві шести осіб в Харківській області, затримано без можливості внесення застави.

Detention Ordered for Russian Soldier Accused of Multiple Killings

A 36-year-old Russian serviceman, Leonid Ryzhikov, has been remanded in custody without the option of bail. He faces allegations of murdering five members of Ukraine's 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade along with a civilian resident of Kharkiv region. The charges fall under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which addresses violations of the laws and customs of war resulting in fatalities. Convictions under this statute carry penalties ranging from 10 to 15 years imprisonment or life sentences.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Ryzhikov, originally from Saint Petersburg, served in the 1009th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 68th Motorized Rifle Division, part of the 6th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Armed Forces. Around October 5–6, he reportedly set out on foot toward Kharkiv. On October 9, after changing into civilian clothes near a lake, he kept his automatic rifle with him.

According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, on October 13 in the village of Mykhailivka within Kharkiv district, Ryzhikov shot a local fisherman in the head, killing him instantly. He then took the victim's belongings and disposed of the body in a nearby body of water. Later that day, in the village of Momotove, Ryzhikov opened fire on five Ukrainian soldiers, killing them on the spot. After the shootings, he abandoned the residence, discarded his weapon, and fled on foot through a forested area toward Kharkiv city.

Ryzhikov was apprehended on October 14 in one of Kharkiv's districts following these mass killings. The regional prosecutor's office confirmed the detention and stated:

"At the request of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor, the Russian soldier suspected of murdering six individuals in Kharkiv region has been placed in custody without the possibility of bail."

This case highlights the grave nature of wartime violations and underscores Ukraine's commitment to prosecuting those responsible for crimes against both civilians and military personnel. The decision to deny bail reflects the severity of the offenses and the perceived threat posed by the suspect. The proceedings against Ryzhikov may set a significant precedent in international law concerning accountability for war crimes.
