Russian Tennis Player Banned for Match-Fixing: Details of the Scandal

Український тенісист отримав заборону через маніпуляції у матчах: усі подробиці гучного скандалу.

Alana Tuaeva's Suspension

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has banned Russian tennis player Alana Tuaeva for breaching its anti-corruption program. The athlete received a disqualification of 3 years and 9 months and was ordered to pay a fine of $30,000, of which $21,000 is suspended. Tuaeva admitted to the ITIA rule violations, stating she participated in two arranged matches in 2023 and 2024. The ITIA is the sport's primary body for investigating and sanctioning corruption offenses.

Alana Tuaeva's ban began on 19 December 2025 and will last until 18 September 2029. At the time of the ban, she is 26 years old, and her career-high ranking is 1282 in the WTA singles rankings, achieved in September 2025. The athlete waived her right to an additional hearing before an independent specialist.

Alexandra Sayutina's Attendance

Separately, Russian speed skater Alexandra Sayutina, recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU), was present at Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly. Sayutina attended this address on 29 February 2024. She appeared in the video broadcast of the event, which also featured Putin's allies and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Russian cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova posted a photo on Instagram confirming Sayutina's participation at the event. This appearance highlights the ongoing scrutiny of athletes' political associations, even under a neutral competitive status.

The suspension of Alana Tuaeva underscores the increasing focus on anti-corruption measures in sports, particularly as governing bodies strive to uphold integrity and transparency. The disqualification may serve as a warning to other athletes involved in dubious practices. Meanwhile, Alexandra Sayutina's presence at a state-level event points to the complex interplay between sports and politics, which can influence the perception of neutral athletes within the international community.
