Corruption Uncovered in Military Unit
Law enforcement in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region has exposed a corruption scheme within a local military unit, where officials embezzled state funds intended for building defensive fortifications in 2024. The alleged organizers are the unit's commander, a colonel, and the head of its state procurement group. The total estimated loss to the state budget exceeds 14 million hryvnias. Suspects have been formally notified of the charges, and the investigation is ongoing.
Details of the Embezzlement Schemes
The illicit activity occurred in 2024, involving the procurement of fortification materials at artificially inflated prices. Investigators found that the prices paid were roughly 20% above market rates. In just one scheme during May and June of 2024, the state suffered losses of 7.3 million hryvnias. A suspect in this case has been charged under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
A separate scheme involved a group of four individuals:
- The head of the military unit's state procurement group;
- An officer from the same group;
- The officer's wife;
- A civilian arbitration manager.
This group is accused of misappropriating approximately 6.7 million hryvnias. Three of the suspects have been placed under restrictive measures, while the fourth is currently hospitalized. Authorities are also examining potential additional embezzlement involving tens of millions of hryvnias. This case highlights the severe challenges of wartime corruption, where the diversion of defense funds directly undermines national security. The ongoing probe may lead to significant reforms in military procurement and stricter financial oversight.
