Temporary Closure of Shurdyn Pass
Starting November 1, 2026, until April 30, 2027, vehicle traffic will be suspended on the Shurdyn Pass in Bukovyna. This closure will affect drivers heading toward the Ruska border crossing point on the Romania-Ukraine border. Despite the pass closure, the Ruska checkpoint will remain operational for cars during this period.
Located in the Carpathian Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1173 meters, Shurdyn Pass features a narrow road with steep curves and climbs. The closure is necessary due to harsh winter weather conditions, including snow and difficult driving hazards, which pose risks for motorists. To accommodate travelers, two detour routes have been arranged:
- Route P-62
- Route T-26-01
Route P-62 runs through Kryvorivnia, Ust-Putyla, Stari Kuty, Vyzhnytsia, Storozhynets, and Chernivtsi. The alternative T-26-01 links Chernivtsi, Vashkivtsi, Putyla, and the Ruska checkpoint. Directional signs with detour maps are installed along these roads to assist drivers. The Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service of Chernivtsi Oblast advises motorists to plan ahead, as these detours may extend travel times.
Regular passage through Shurdyn Pass is expected to resume on April 30, 2027.
While the closure of Shurdyn Pass presents challenges for those traveling to Romania, the availability of alternative routes helps minimize disruption.
Drivers should be aware of the route changes and the potential for longer journeys, especially under winter conditions. This measure is part of winter road safety efforts aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring secure travel for all road users.
