Traffic Restrictions and Public Transit Adjustments
Starting March 31, pedestrian access through the underground crossing at Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) in Kyiv will be partially restricted. The Shevchenkivskyi District Municipal Enterprise (SHEU) is conducting repairs on the stairways, which will be carried out in phases, limiting each entrance group in turn and potentially complicating foot traffic. This work is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade the city's aging infrastructure, which faces significant funding challenges.
Separately, tram routes 11, 12, 16, and 19 have been rerouted until March 20 due to track repairs on Kyrylivska Street. Furthermore, since March 4, public electric transport routes have also been altered because of repair work on the overpass at the intersection of Ronald Reagan Street and Honoré de Balzac Street.
The Scale of Ukraine's Infrastructure Needs
These local projects highlight a much larger national issue. Currently, an estimated 52 billion Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH) is required for road repairs across Ukraine, underscoring the critical need for such infrastructure work.
The planned repairs in Kyiv form part of a broader city improvement program aimed at enhancing safety and convenience for residents and visitors. While the tunnel restrictions and transit route changes may cause temporary disruptions, these measures are intended to improve road quality and user comfort in the long term. City officials advise residents to prepare for possible inconveniences during the construction period.
