International Rail Services Make a Comeback
Romania's national railway operator, CFR Călători, has reinstated seasonal international services linking the country with Bulgaria and Turkey. Direct trains from Bucharest to Istanbul, Sofia, and Varna began running on June 12, with the return of the Bucharest–Varna route. The following day, June 13, direct services to Sofia and Istanbul were also resumed. These routes will remain operational until October 12, though the final departure from Bucharest to Varna is scheduled for October 11.
One-way ticket prices for these routes start at €27. Tickets go on sale 90 days before departure and can be purchased through the official CFR Călători website or at railway station ticket counters. For travelers with flexibility, these routes are also accessible to Interrail pass holders.

Reestablishing international rail links between Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey could be a significant step in boosting the region's tourism potential and strengthening cross-border connections. The growing demand for train travel suggests a shift in traveler preferences toward more sustainable and convenient modes of transport. This development may also stimulate economic growth and enhance mutual tourist appeal among these countries. Affordable ticket pricing further makes these journeys attractive to a wide range of travelers.
As Romania enhances its international rail connectivity, it's interesting to note that other countries are also making adjustments to their train services. For instance, Ukrainian train schedules are shifting to daily operations this summer, reflecting a broader trend in the region towards more frequent and accessible rail travel. This could provide travelers with even more options for exploring Eastern Europe.
