Neutralizing a Russian Mine
A Russian YARM-type naval mine that drifted toward the Black Sea shore was safely neutralized by Romanian military personnel. The explosive device was discovered near a beach situated between two coastal towns. Since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Romania has disabled nine drifting mines, while a total of 156 explosive objects have been detected across the Black Sea during this period.
Regional Cooperation on Security
To bolster security in the area, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have formed a joint task force responsible for patrolling and clearing mines from the Black Sea. This collaboration aims to improve safety in a waterway that has become increasingly hazardous due to ongoing military activities.
On the night of May 29, during a Russian strike on southern Ukraine, a drone crossed Romania's state border and crashed into the roof of a ten-story building in Galati—a border town located roughly 20 kilometers from Ukraine. The aircraft was identified as a 'Geran-2,' the Russian version of Iran's 'Shahed' drone. A fire broke out on the top floor of the building in Galati, causing significant damage to an apartment.
In response, Romania urged NATO to accelerate the delivery of air defense systems. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the drone incident as a 'serious and irresponsible escalation.' Romania also summoned the Russian ambassador over the matter. Over the past four years of hostilities near NATO's borders, Romania has recorded 47 drone incursions into its airspace.
These events highlight the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea region, where the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to affect neighboring countries. The joint security efforts by Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey underscore the severity of the threats these nations face. The drone incident further reveals potential dangers to civilians and has pushed Romania to actively seek stronger support from NATO to enhance its defensive capabilities.
The recent drone incident in Romania underscores the escalating tensions in the region, further complicating the security dynamics around the Black Sea. As military activities intensify, the need for enhanced protective measures becomes increasingly evident.
