NATO Reveals Mechanism for Responding to Russian Violator Aircraft

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte explained how the Alliance reacts to violations of air corridors by Russia. He noted that all decisions are made based on operational intelligence and threat assessment.


During a speech at NATO headquarters in Brussels, the Secretary General emphasized that responses to violations occur in real time, taking all circumstances into account.


'Decisions regarding the use of force against violators, including their downing, are made in real time based on received threat information,' Rutte explained.

Rutte also emphasized that when making such decisions, the intentions of the violator, the presence of weapons, and possible consequences for the Alliance, civilian population, and infrastructure are considered.


Rutte also noted that European NATO forces have the necessary means and authority to make such decisions.
