Updated Checked Baggage Drop-Off Policy

Beginning November 10, 2023, Ryanair will implement new guidelines for checked baggage drop-off. From this date forward, counters for checked luggage will close one hour before the scheduled flight departure, an increase from the previous 40-minute cutoff. This adjustment only affects passengers traveling with checked bags, who represent about 20% of Ryanair’s customers. The remaining 80% of travelers, those without checked luggage, will see no changes to their check-in process.

Ryanair’s CEO, Dara Brady, stated: 'Starting Tuesday, November 10, all Ryanair airports will close their baggage drop-off counters 60 minutes before the scheduled departure, instead of the current 40 minutes.'

He also emphasized that this change is designed to give passengers more time to complete necessary security checks and reach their boarding gates on schedule.

Anticipated Rise in Airfare Prices by 2027

Alongside the baggage policy update, Ryanair has warned travelers about a potential fare increase expected in 2027. CEO Michael O’Leary predicted that customers might face the largest price hikes in the airline’s history. Ticket costs could soar by up to 20% driven by industry bankruptcies, airline mergers, and challenges with aviation fuel supplies. Fuel availability has been further strained due to geopolitical tensions and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict in Iran, causing fuel prices to escalate.

These revised baggage drop-off rules will notably impact passengers accustomed to the former timeframes, especially during peak travel seasons. The forecasted surge in ticket prices may also influence consumer behavior, encouraging travelers to seek more affordable alternatives. Together, these developments and broader economic factors are poised to significantly shape the air travel market and passenger choices.

At the same time, Ryanair is working to adjust its services to meet evolving customer needs and market conditions, a strategy that could strengthen its competitive position over the long term.

As Ryanair adjusts its baggage drop-off policy, travelers should also be aware of the potential impact of the ongoing fuel crisis on future ticket prices. According to CEO Michael O’Leary, the airline anticipates a significant fare increase of up to 20% by 2027 due to factors such as industry challenges and geopolitical tensions.
