Forecast from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center reports that prevailing northwesterly airflows will prevent Saharan dust from reaching Ukraine in the coming days. While a minor amount of dust could arrive in Ukraine's far west on April 16, concentrations will be low and are not expected to significantly impact air quality. Such dust events, while dramatic, are a natural atmospheric phenomenon that can occasionally affect parts of Europe.
"Recently, there have been many inquiries about the potential arrival of dust from the Sahara. According to Eumetsat satellite data, a minor transfer of dust is currently observed in the airspace over the Mediterranean Sea towards southern Italy," noted the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
Over the next several days, northwesterly airflows will dominate over Ukraine, creating conditions for stable weather. Satellite data from Eumetsat confirms the current transport of a small amount of dust over the Mediterranean towards southern Italy.
Furthermore, hazardous and severe weather phenomena are expected in Ukraine on April 14. Overnight on that date, except for the Transcarpathian and eastern regions, ground frosts of 0-5°C are forecast. Consequently, a Level I (yellow) danger warning has been issued for April 14.
"A shift to westerly air mass movement is expected on April 16. This could create preconditions for an air mass with a minor dust content to arrive in the far west of Ukraine. However, possible concentrations will be low and will not have a noticeable impact on air quality," the center added.
It is also worth noting that April 12, 2024, was the coldest day in Lviv in the last four decades.
Overall, the forecasts from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center point to relatively stable weather conditions in the coming days, despite the possibility of some Saharan dust arrival. This dust is not expected to substantially affect air quality, which is positive news for residents of western regions. Meanwhile, the frost forecast for April 14 indicates a need for caution, particularly in the context of agriculture and other outdoor activities.
