Scam Operation in Ukraine
A new fraud scheme is targeting car owners in Ukraine, luring them with promises of free gasoline in exchange for subscribing to a Telegram channel. Scammers are circulating messages through social media and messaging apps, offering a promo code for 10 liters of fuel. This attractive offer, however, is a trap that leads to a phishing website designed to mimic the official pages of real fuel station networks.
Victims who click the link are prompted to enter their phone number and a confirmation code. This action grants the fraudsters access to their accounts. Within 24 hours, the scammers log the user out of all active sessions and enable two-factor authentication on the account, making it extremely difficult for the rightful owner to regain access.
Expert Security Advice
Cybersecurity experts point out that offers that seem too good to be true are a favorite tool for online criminals. Specialists advise Ukrainian citizens to take the following precautions:
- Ignore any offers for free goods that appear suspicious;
- Verify promotions directly on the official websites of fuel companies;
- Avoid sharing personal data to prevent losing access to your accounts.
This scam highlights the critical need for vigilance online, as criminals continuously refine their deceptive techniques to exploit user trust. Such phishing attacks are a global issue, but they often adapt to local contexts and current events. Raising awareness of potential threats and double-checking information on official sources can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to these fraudsters.
