Release Timeline for Samsung's First Smart Glasses

Samsung has officially set the release date for its debut smart glasses, Intelligent Eyewear, which run on the Android XR platform. Sales are expected to begin in mid-December 2024. These glasses feature the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip and include a camera, microphones, and speakers, but notably do not have a built-in display.

Features and Design Highlights of Samsung's Smart Glasses

The initial launch will target South Korea and the United States, with Europe, China, and Japan excluded from the first wave. The device offers up to 9 hours of battery life per charge. Google’s AI, Gemini, processes data collected through a connected Galaxy smartphone. Key capabilities include:

  • Real-time language translation;
  • Voice-guided navigation;
  • Capturing photos of documents and meetings;
  • Organizing images within a notes application.

Privacy has been a focal point in discussions with South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission, leading Samsung to implement LED indicators on both the inside and outside of the frames to signal when the camera and microphones are active. The glasses will automatically stop recording if the external LED is obstructed.

The frames were co-designed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with four styles unveiled at Google I/O in May 2024 and Galaxy Unpacked in July 2024. Samsung aims to produce models lighter than the 51-gram Ray-Ban glasses by Meta, which currently dominate 96% of the smart glasses market without displays. Pricing details have yet to be announced.

Samsung’s entry into the smart eyewear market marks a significant move in the evolving landscape of wearable technology. While the absence of a display might appeal to some users seeking a less intrusive experience, others may see it as a limitation. The inclusion of features like live language translation and integration with Google Gemini’s AI positions these glasses as a practical tool for everyday tech users. Samsung’s commitment to user privacy and transparent recording indicators highlights a responsible approach to data security in this new category.
