SanDisk Extreme Fit: A Fresh Take on Compact USB-C Drives

SanDisk has unveiled the Extreme Fit, a new USB-C flash drive that offers as much as 1TB of capacity while barely protruding from the USB port. The drive's USB-C connector is positioned vertically, a design move that's new for the company. SanDisk calls the Extreme Fit one of the smallest USB drives in the world, with dimensions of about 1.85 x 1.37 x 1.6 cm and a weight of just 2.8 grams. Apple's recent switch to USB-C on iPhone 15 models has made compact storage accessories like this especially relevant.

Extreme Fit lineup: capacities and performance

The Extreme Fit range is available in these storage sizes:

  • 64GB
  • 128GB
  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB

Read speeds reach up to 400MB/s for models from 128GB to 1TB, while the 64GB version tops out at 300MB/s. Write speeds vary by version, landing roughly between 100MB/s and 250MB/s. The drive works with iPhone 15 and newer models that have a USB-C port, while older iPhones with Lightning require an adapter.

Creating the device involved several prototypes, and most of them failed under load before the final design was approved. The connector is set at a right angle to the main memory module, which makes the drive more convenient to use. Files can be transferred through Apple's standard Files app, adding to its everyday practicality.

SanDisk's latest storage lineup shows how data storage technology continues to evolve in step with modern mobile device requirements.

With USB-C becoming increasingly common, the Extreme Fit is likely to appeal to users looking for a compact and speedy storage solution. It also underscores the importance of adapting technology to new standards, a trend that will shape the future of the gadget accessories market.
