Presidents of Ukraine and Moldova exchanged state distinctions
On August 24, 2026, in Kyiv, during the celebration of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, a solemn ceremony took place, centered around Volodymyr Zelensky and Maia Sandu. The heads of the two states presented awards to each other, thus emphasizing the high level of mutual recognition.
The Moldovan side awarded the Ukrainian president the Order of the Republic — the highest state award of Moldova. In return, Maia Sandu received a Ukrainian honor — the Order of Princess Olha of the 1st class.
The presentation of the order to Zelensky was a sign of appreciation from the Moldovan people for the resilience of Ukrainians and their contribution to preserving peace and freedom in Europe. Sandu emphasized that for four and a half years, Ukrainians have defended not only their own country but also the tranquility of the entire continent.
“For already four and a half years, Ukrainians defend their land, and with their courage, they safeguard the peace of all Europe. The peace in Moldova also relies on this courage,” noted Maia Sandu.
Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, awarded his Moldovan colleague for her foresight and consistent support for Ukraine in the face of armed aggression. The Order of Princess Olha was established in Ukraine in 1997 and is awarded to women for outstanding contributions in state, public, scientific, educational, and cultural activities.

The event took place in the presence of leaders of foreign states and governments. Among the guests were representatives from the United Kingdom, Estonia, Luxembourg, Moldova, as well as the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa.
In honor of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, iconic buildings in Canada, the United Kingdom, Brussels, and Moldova were illuminated in blue and yellow.
Speaking on Independence Day, Zelensky stated that Kyiv harbors no illusions about Moscow's intentions and will not agree to concessions that would allow the Kremlin to continue the war. Additionally, the head of state awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to Andriy Biletsky and eleven other defenders, acknowledging their contributions to the defense of the country.
