Remarks by Moldova’s President at the Globsec Forum
At the Globsec international forum in Prague, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that Russia shows no genuine interest in peace negotiations and urged the international community to intensify pressure on Moscow. She emphasized that
“economic pressure on Russia must be increased. I do not believe the Kremlin and Putin are serious about meaningful peace talks. Support for Ukraine—whatever kind it needs—must continue. That is the only way to restore peace in our region.”
Current State of Ukraine-Russia Negotiations
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the United States withdrew from the Ukraine-Russia talks due to a lack of progress in dialogue. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the peace process regarding Ukraine is currently on hold. He also stated that Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow at any time. Peskov stressed, however, that a meeting outside Moscow would only be meaningful for signing final agreements.
For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky has previously expressed willingness to engage in direct talks only if they are held outside Russia and Belarus. Peskov also acknowledged that negotiations with Ukraine are in a difficult phase and said that reaching a peace agreement would take a long time. These developments highlight ongoing tensions in Ukraine-Russia relations and the challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Against this backdrop, Maia Sandu drew attention to the threats posed by Russian aggression, specifically noting Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics, which include:
- cyberattacks,
- information manipulation,
- illegal shadow financing of political forces.
This situation calls for joint efforts by the international community to support Ukraine and counter aggression.
The state of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia remains extremely tense, underscoring the complexity of diplomatic efforts on both sides. Moldova’s stance, along with that of other countries supporting Ukraine, highlights the importance of international solidarity and coordinated action in combating the aggression that continues to threaten regional security. With peace talks on pause, the situation demands ongoing monitoring and adaptation of response strategies by the global community.
In light of the ongoing diplomatic challenges, it is crucial to understand the broader context of international security efforts. Recently, Zelensky highlighted discussions with the USA regarding security and diplomatic strategies, underlining the importance of coordinated action among allies in response to the escalating tensions in the region.
