Investigation Concludes in Major Grain Embezzlement Case
Ukraine's Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) have finalized their investigation into the theft of grain valued at over $60 million from the state-owned Public Joint-Stock Company State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine. The owner of an international grain trading firm is suspected of orchestrating the illegal seizure of the commodities. Case materials have now been made available to the defense team for review.
According to NABU detectives, between July and October 2014, officials at the state grain corporation collaborated with a representative of a foreign grain trader to sell grain at artificially low prices to companies under their control. The shipments were sent to Saudi Arabia via intermediaries on a post-payment basis, but the buyers never remitted payment. As a result, the state enterprise incurred losses exceeding $60 million.
To launder the proceeds, the perpetrators funneled $40.9 million through foreign companies registered in Cyprus. Six individuals are implicated in the criminal operation. Courts have already issued guilty verdicts against three former officials of the state grain corporation and the owner of the offshore company. Proceedings are ongoing in court for one additional representative of the grain trader.
