Sappers Begin Clearing 40 Hectares Near Makariv to Restore Farmland Access

Сапери розпочали очищення 40 гектарів поблизу Макарова для відновлення доступу до сільськогосподарських угідь.

Humanitarian Demining Across the Region

Efforts are underway to clear contaminated land across the region as part of a humanitarian demining initiative. Emergency service sappers are currently working in the Makariv area, focusing on fields near the town of Makariv, with the goal of allowing local farmers to resume operations. The demining process began in April of this year. So far, 1.3 hectares out of the total 40 hectares slated for clearance have been surveyed.

To carry out the work, the team is using a robotic system called the NRK Zmiy. The priority zone for inspection covers 8 hectares. Sappers have discovered remnants of munitions, including fragments, but these are not explosive and pose no danger. Pyrotechnician Volodymyr Vasiliev commented:

“Getting ready for the job takes a lot of time because safety rules are very strict.” - Volodymyr Vasiliev

Vasiliev also noted that setting up the command post required careful site selection to maintain a safe distance from the danger zone and to establish a secure access route to the area. The sappers continue their work to create safe conditions for farmers in the region.

Why Demining Matters for Agriculture

Clearing the land is a critical step in reviving agriculture in the region, as many local growers have suffered losses due to contaminated fields. Restoring safe working conditions for farmers will not only help them restart their operations but also support the broader economic recovery of the area. Sustained attention is needed, as both public safety and the agricultural sector remain top priorities during the post-conflict rebuilding process.
