Saudi Aramco in Talks with Ukrainian Manufacturers
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, cited by 'Glavcom', the Saudi Arabian government and its state-owned oil giant, Saudi Aramco, are actively negotiating with Ukrainian defense firms. The goal is to acquire drone interceptors and electronic warfare systems to protect the kingdom's critical oil facilities from attacks by Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles. This move highlights how the global drone warfare landscape is evolving, with nations seeking specialized counter-drone solutions.
In an effort to move faster than the Saudi government and regional competitors like Qatar, Aramco is pursuing deals with two specific Ukrainian manufacturers:
- SkyFall, the producer of the P1-SUN interceptor drone;
- Wild Hornets, which creates the Sting interceptor drone.
Separately, the Saudi government is also in discussions with the company Phantom Defense regarding the potential purchase of electronic warfare systems designed to jam drone communication channels.
Growing Demand for Ukrainian Defense Expertise
The interest in Ukrainian technology intensified following a major incident at one of Saudi Arabia's largest oil facilities. UK Defense Minister John Healey has suggested a potential link between Iranian tactics and the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating,
"Russia's influence may be behind Iran's military methods."He further added,
"British intelligence has detected signs of Iran receiving drone warfare tactics that Russia is employing in its war against Ukraine."
The security situation in the Middle East is also a concern for the United States, which is reassessing regional air defense systems due to attacks by Iranian kamikaze drones. U.S. military officials have noted that
"traditional air defense systems have proven largely ineffective against mass drone launches."This underscores the urgency of the measures being taken to safeguard Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure.
