Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Key Oil Terminal Deep Inside Russia

Безпрецедентна атака українських дронів на стратегічно важливий нафтовий термінал на території агресора.

Kaleykino Oil Pumping Station Targeted

On February 23, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) launched a drone strike against the Kaleykino oil pumping station in Tatarstan. The attack targeted this key facility near the city of Almetyevsk, which lies over 1,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This operation demonstrates Ukraine's capacity to project force far beyond the front lines.

The Kaleykino station, owned by the Russian state pipeline operator Transneft, is a crucial hub for feeding crude oil into the Druzhba pipeline system. The assault involved six explosions, triggering a major fire that engulfed oil storage tanks. These tanks receive crude flows from Western Siberia and the Volga region. The station also blends crude for export and domestic refinery supply, maintaining the critical pressure needed for pipeline transportation. The Druzhba pipeline is a major artery for Russian oil exports to several European countries.

Implications for Energy Security

The strike on the Tatarstan facility underscores Ukraine's escalating campaign to target Russian energy infrastructure in retaliation for the ongoing war. Despite the vast distance involved, it highlights the strategic use of drone technology to reach high-value objectives. Such incidents threaten regional energy security and are likely to increase tensions, as they disrupt critical infrastructure essential for hydrocarbon supply.
