Ukrainian Drone Strike on Russian Oil Station Causes Massive 20,000 Square Meter Blaze

Вибуховий дрон українських сил вразив російську нафтову установку, викликавши величезну пожежу на величезній площі.

Strike on the Gorky Oil Pumping Station

On the night of April 23, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) launched an attack on the Gorky oil pumping station located in the village of Meschikha, Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia. The operation set three oil reservoirs ablaze, with the fire spreading across approximately 20,000 square meters. The strike was carried out by drones operated by the SBU’s Alpha Special Operations Center. The Gorky station is part of the Transneft – Verkhnyaya Volga network and plays a key role in moving oil along the Surgut – Gorky – Polotsk pipeline route. It also supplies crude to the Lukoil refinery in Kstovo. From Gorky, oil feeds into the Druzhba pipeline, which was recently upgraded to transport crude to Slovakia and Hungary.

Feodosia Oil Depot Attack and Regional Fallout

That same night, a separate attack targeted an oil depot in the port of Feodosia. This facility had already been hit before: on April 8, a strike burned through several fuel tanks, and on April 16, unmanned systems struck a Pantsir air defense system located on the same depot grounds.

In addition, one person was killed in a strike in Novokuybyshevsk, Samara region. The target may have been the Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on April 23 that it had intercepted 154 Ukrainian drones, though no independent verification of that number exists.

These events highlight the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, particularly regarding attacks on critical infrastructure. The strikes on the Gorky pumping station and the Feodosia oil depot reflect Ukraine's strategic aim to degrade Russia’s energy capabilities. Such actions could undermine Russia’s energy security and disrupt oil supplies to Europe, making these incidents key to understanding the broader dynamics of the war.

The recent aerial assault on the Gorky oil pumping station is part of a broader pattern of Ukrainian strikes targeting key energy facilities in Russia. In a similar incident, a drone attack ignited a significant oil terminal, which underscores Ukraine's ongoing strategy to disrupt Russian energy operations.
