Ukraine's New Naval Drones
Ukraine is intensively developing new naval drones with advanced capabilities. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has revealed an upgraded generation of Sea Baby drones, which have already proven their effectiveness in missions across the Black Sea. A key achievement demonstrating their strategic value was the third successful strike on the Kerch (Crimean) Bridge.
These enhanced Sea Baby models were funded through the United24 crowdfunding platform. Capable of traveling over 1,500 km and carrying payloads of up to 2,000 kg, the drones feature reinforced engines and modern navigation systems, significantly boosting their combat performance. Furthermore, Ukraine has engineered an unmanned surface vessel that can deploy multiple fiber-optic drones from drop compartments. This system is considered unique and has no known global equivalents.
Combat Capabilities of the Drones
The Magura V5 drones have also demonstrated high combat potential. They participated in the NATO Repmus 24 exercise off the coast of Portugal, where, in a simulated combat scenario, they successfully 'sank' a large enemy vessel, played by a modern frigate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted:
“Soon, and not in the distant future, we will have systems capable of operating even in ocean conditions.”
The development of these new naval drones underscores Ukraine's growing military capability in the context of modern warfare, particularly in the Black Sea region. These unmanned systems have become a critical asymmetric tool for Ukraine against a larger naval force. The implementation of such innovative technologies is a vital step in strengthening national security and defense resilience. Their successful testing in international exercises also signals global recognition of Ukrainian military technology, which may positively influence international security cooperation and support for Ukraine.
As Ukraine continues to innovate in its defense capabilities, President Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of the domestic drone sector, calling it a vital asset for the country's military strategy.
