Two Russian Agents Arrested in Plot to Assassinate a Ukrainian Defense Forces Major General

Затримано двох російських агентів, що планували вбивство генерала українських збройних сил.

Arrests Foil Contract Killing Attempt

Ukrainian counterintelligence and the National Police have disrupted a planned contract killing targeting a Major General of the Defense Forces. The operation unfolded in the Zhytomyr region, where two operatives working for the Russian Federation were detained while preparing the assassination. Both suspects, drug addicts from the town of Korostyshiv, were recruited through Telegram channels and already had a criminal track record.

The individuals had conducted reconnaissance near the general's residence and were awaiting instructions from their handler in Russia to retrieve a hidden weapons cache. The arrests took place during the planning phase, underscoring the seriousness of the threat. During searches, authorities seized smartphones containing evidence of contacts with Russian intelligence services and preparations for the attack on the military officer.

“After recruitment, Russian intelligence agents gave the operatives test assignments,” the SBU reported.

Both suspects have been charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law) and under paragraphs 6 and 12 of Part 2 of Article 115 (premeditated murder for profit by a group acting on prior conspiracy). They are also linked to at least two murders in northern Ukraine. The perpetrators are currently in custody.

Law Enforcement's Critical Role

This case highlights the vital work of law enforcement amid an ongoing war. In a similar recent operation, SBU counterintelligence prevented a terrorist attack in central Kropyvnytskyi, where an FSB agent was arrested for plotting to kill a state official responsible for civilian defense training in the Kirovohrad region.

The arrest of operatives attempting a contract killing shows that Ukrainian security services are stepping up efforts to counter threats to national security during wartime. Importantly, counterintelligence operations extend beyond major cities into smaller towns, reflecting the broad scope of the danger. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened security around military and government officials, as such attacks may be part of a systematic campaign to destabilize Ukraine.

This recent arrest underscores the ongoing threat posed by foreign intelligence agencies in Ukraine. Similarly, in a recent operation, Ukrainian security forces apprehended an FSB agent involved in a bombing plot at a military base, highlighting the critical role of law enforcement in countering such threats during these turbulent times.
