Attacks on Strategic Russian Infrastructure
Operatives from the SBU’s Special Operations Forces targeted two key facilities inside Russia: the Yaroslavl-3 oil pumping station in the Yaroslavl region and a gas terminal at the port of Temryuk in Kuban. The mission was carried out by the Alpha Special Operations Center as part of directives from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Yaroslavl-3 station is a critical component of the Baltic Pipeline System (BTS-1), supplying crude to the Slavneft-YANOS refinery and the port of Primorsk. Following the strike, three crude oil storage tanks caught fire, with the blaze covering over 5,000 square meters. Meanwhile, the attack on the Temryuk gas terminal ignited a fire at the premises of Makren-Nafta LLC, where a gas pipeline on the pier and adjacent buildings went up in flames. This terminal handles the transfer of liquefied gas from railcars and tank containers to gas carrier ships.
Why These Strikes Matter for Russia’s Economy
These operations are a strategic blow to Russia’s oil exports, which serve as the primary revenue stream for the Kremlin’s budget. Every disabled station, halted pipeline, or damaged refinery translates into millions of dollars that Moscow cannot channel into missiles, drones, or artillery shells. By targeting these assets, Ukraine is effectively bringing the war back to Russian soil and forcing the aggressor to bear the true cost of its invasion.
Ukraine’s actions reflect a strategic approach to warfare that combines defensive operations with proactive offensive measures designed to weaken the enemy’s economic foundation.

Strikes on Russia’s critical infrastructure could significantly impair its ability to fund military operations, potentially altering the trajectory of the conflict. Developments in this area will serve as a key indicator of how both sides adapt their strategies moving forward.
In light of these recent strikes, it's important to consider the broader implications for Russia's energy sector. Similar operations have targeted key refineries, such as those in Yaroslavl and Astrakhan, further crippling the Kremlin’s oil production capabilities.
