Ukrainian Forces Cripple Russian Frigate 'Admiral Essen,' Neutralizing Its Kalibr Missile Capability

Українські війська завдали суттєвого удару по фрегату 'Адмірал Ессен', позбавивши його можливості запуску ракет.

Strike on the Russian Frigate 'Admiral Essen'

In a joint operation on the night of March 2, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and Defense Forces targeted the Russian frigate 'Admiral Essen' at the port of Novorossiysk. The vessel, a key platform for launching Kalibr cruise missiles, sustained critical damage that has severely degraded its combat effectiveness. Specifically, the attack has rendered the frigate incapable of firing Kalibr missiles against Ukrainian territory. This successful strike demonstrates Ukraine's expanding ability to project force against Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which has been a persistent threat since the full-scale invasion began.

The strike targeted the ship's midsection superstructure, igniting a deck fire that burned for approximately 18 hours. The impact triggered explosions of grenade launchers used for firing decoys and radar jammers. Furthermore, the attack damaged the TK-25 electronic warfare complex and the ZR-90 'Orekh' target illumination radars. There is also a strong possibility that the primary surveillance radar, the 'Fregat-M2M,' was compromised.

Implications for Maritime Security

The SBU managed to penetrate the multi-layered air defense systems protecting Novorossiysk Bay and its port. This significant breach, combined with the critical damage to the frigate, has drastically reduced the warship's operational readiness. This attack is part of a broader Ukrainian campaign against Russian naval assets in the region, which has previously successfully hit:

  • The sea minesweeper 'Valentin Pikul'
  • The anti-submarine ships 'Yeysk' and 'Kasimov'

The successful targeting of the 'Admiral Essen' underscores the growing sophistication of Ukrainian maritime operations and their capacity to overcome complex air defense networks. Neutralizing this Kalibr missile platform could substantially alter the balance of power in the Black Sea, reducing the threat from the Russian fleet. These events point to an escalation of the naval conflict, with potential consequences for the future military actions of both sides.
