Ukrainian Drones Strike Key Russian Munitions Plant in 1,600 km Deep Raid

Українські безпілотники завдали удару по стратегічному об'єкту в глибині російської території.

Chemical Plant in Russia Targeted in Long-Range Strike

On the night of February 17, drones operated by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) struck a chemical plant in Russia that manufactures components for munitions. The attack targeted a methanol production unit at the 'Metafrax Chemicals' plant, located in the Perm Krai region. The facility is situated over 1,600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This plant is one of the largest methanol producers in both Russia and Europe.

The 'Metafrax Chemicals' plant is also involved in the production of:

  • urotropin
  • urea
  • pentaerythritol

Products from this enterprise are used in the manufacture of explosives and military-grade materials, making it a significant asset for the Russian military-industrial complex. The plant is noted to be under international sanctions.

Local sources reported at least six explosions occurring on the enterprise's grounds. The attack resulted in the evacuation of plant workers. According to a source within the Security Service, 'the SBU continues its systematic operations against enterprises that supply raw materials and components for weapons production to the Russian military-industrial complex. Striking such targets reduces the pace of ammunition production, complicates the supply of resources to the army, and directly impacts the intensity of combat operations against Ukraine.'

Strategic Implications of the Attack

This operation marks the second time this month that SBU drones have struck a Russian energy target, following an earlier attack on the 'Tamannaftogaz' oil terminal. This long-range capability demonstrates Ukraine's growing ability to project force deep into Russian territory.

The strike on the 'Metafrax Chemicals' plant underscores the continuation of active SBU efforts to degrade production capacities supporting Russian military infrastructure. Within the context of the war in Ukraine, such strikes can significantly impact Russia's ability to manufacture ammunition, which in turn influences the course of hostilities. Given the importance of methanol and other components produced at this plant, the attack holds strategic significance for the broader conflict.
