Ukraine’s Security Service Shuts Down $10,000 Smuggling Route for Draft Evaders to Moldova

Служба безпеки України ліквідувала канал контрабанди, який використовувався для втечі призовників до Молдови.

Cracking Down on Illegal Border Crossings in Ukraine

Authorities in the Khmelnytskyi region, working with Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and the National Police, have dismantled a human smuggling operation that moved men illegally into Moldova. The scheme’s organizers charged clients over $10,000 each to cross the border. Two suspects have been arrested: a 51-year-old woman from the Khmelnytskyi region and a 39-year-old man from Bukovyna.

The smugglers transported draft evaders to Chernivtsi, avoiding military checkpoints along the way. From there, the men were guided on foot through forested areas to the border. Each person paid $10,500 for the journey. Law enforcement caught the suspects in the act while they were attempting to move another client.

Both individuals now face charges under Article 332, Part 3 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. A court has ordered them held in pretrial detention. If convicted, they could face up to nine years in prison.

Fake Employment Schemes Exposed

Separately, in the Volyn region, border guards uncovered a businessman who arranged fraudulent employment at a transport company for $15,000. The 40-year-old director from the Kovel district registered clients in the "Shliakh" system as co-drivers. In Kyiv, another organizer was detained for charging $25,000 to falsely register men as military chaplains.

These cases highlight the ongoing efforts by Ukrainian law enforcement to combat illegal schemes that exploit the country’s mobilization and wartime conditions. The uncovered smuggling channels point to organized groups taking advantage of economic hardship and instability. Arrests and disruption of such operations are expected to reduce draft evasion and strengthen border controls.

In a related effort to combat human trafficking, Ukrainian authorities have recently dismantled another smuggling operation where cryptocurrency payments of up to $6,000 were used. This operation, much like the one targeting draft evaders, underscores the sophistication of networks exploiting wartime conditions.
