Russian Spy Teen Apprehended in Khmelnytskyi by Ukrainian Intelligence
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) successfully intercepted a planned terrorist attack in Khmelnytskyi by detaining a 16-year-old recruited by Russian intelligence. The teenager intended to assassinate a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Evidence shows he was assembling a homemade bomb and had hidden it in a cache, highlighting the gravity of his plot.
The suspect, a minor from Chernivtsi, was recruited via the Telegram social network while seeking income opportunities. Following his recruitment, he traveled to Khmelnytskyi to purchase materials for the improvised explosive device, following detailed instructions from his Russian handler. He then completed the bomb’s assembly using TNT and an electric detonator from a concealed stash, enhancing its lethality with metal nuts.
Law Enforcement Response and Legal Proceedings
In addition to the bomb, the teenager installed a remote-access camera on a tree to provide Russian operatives with surveillance capabilities, demonstrating his intent to maintain control over the operation. After preparing the device, he attempted to leave for Bukovina via the city’s bus station. During the arrest, authorities seized his smartphone, uncovering incriminating evidence of espionage activities.
He has been charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for treason during martial law. The suspect is now held in custody without the option of bail and faces the possibility of life imprisonment accompanied by asset confiscation.
This incident reflects a broader effort by the SBU to prevent terrorist acts and dismantle Russian intelligence networks operating within Ukraine. Their continuous vigilance is vital in maintaining national security amid ongoing conflict.
The teenager’s arrest highlights how vulnerable young people can be to foreign intelligence recruitment, particularly through social media platforms.
Counterintelligence work remains crucial during wartime, as such plots pose significant risks to public safety. The SBU’s proactive measures demonstrate Ukraine’s commitment to neutralizing threats and safeguarding its citizens.
