Arrest of Suspected Russian Intelligence Collaborator
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) apprehended a 20-year-old man accused of working with Russian intelligence. Formerly a student at an Odessa university, he lost his place at the institution and subsequently took a job as a loader in a postal facility. While seeking additional income through Telegram channels, he was recruited by Russian special services.
Suspect’s Activities and Their Implications
Investigations revealed that the suspect initially documented damage caused by Russian strikes in Odessa through photographs. He then installed at least two GPS trackers equipped with remote access capabilities. One device was placed on a military fuel tanker, and another on a civilian fuel truck. These trackers were intended to allow Russian operatives to monitor tanker routes and pinpoint refueling locations, facilitating coordinated attacks on fuel storage sites.
He faces charges under Article 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—high treason committed during martial law—and remains in custody without bail. Conviction could lead to life imprisonment along with property confiscation. Authorities confiscated a smartphone from the suspect containing evidence of his collaboration with the enemy. According to the SBU,
“Following instructions from his Russian handler, the individual purchased GPS trackers, configured them according to the handler’s directions, and installed them on the fuel trucks.”
The SBU acted swiftly to uncover the Russian intelligence operation, dismantle the espionage devices, and detain the agent. This incident comes amid other recent counterintelligence successes, including charging a 19-year-old Kyiv resident with attempted terrorism in Rivne, arresting a Russian spy planning an explosion near a government building, and preventing a terrorist attack in Khmelnytskyi by detaining a minor agent intending to target a Ukrainian soldier.
These developments highlight the vigilance and effectiveness of Ukrainian security agencies in countering Russian espionage and sabotage activities during wartime. The uncovering of such plots plays a vital role in safeguarding national security and protecting critical infrastructure from enemy attacks.
