Ukrainian Security Service Arrests Russian Agent in Rivne for Planting Bomb

Служба безпеки України затримала особу, яка діяла на користь агресора, в Рівному за підозрою у замаху на теракт.

Russian Agent Apprehended in Rivne

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested a Russian agent in the city of Rivne. The individual was caught in the act of attempting to plant an improvised explosive device near a café in a central park. According to the SBU, the detainee, a drug-addicted resident of Zhytomyr, had been recruited by Russian operatives. The explosive device was homemade, concealed inside a cooking pot, and packed with nuts and bolts to act as shrapnel and increase its lethality.

The agent intended to detonate the bomb remotely via a phone call to a mobile device that was attached to the explosive. In an effort to blend in, the suspect was dressed in military-style clothing. During a subsequent search, a smartphone containing evidence of his activities was seized from the individual.

Legal Charges Filed

The perpetrator has been formally notified of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including:

  • Part 1 of Article 14;
  • Part 5 of Article 27;
  • Part 2 of Article 258 (aiding in the preparation of a terrorist act committed by prior conspiracy by a group of persons);
  • Part 2 of Article 263-1 (illegal manufacture of explosives or explosive devices).

He faces a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The Security Service of Ukraine stated that 'investigators established the perpetrator concealed the explosives in a pot and equipped it with nuts to enhance its destructive effect. After planting the improvised explosive device, the occupiers planned to activate it remotely via a call to a mobile phone attached to the bomb.'

This incident is part of Ukraine's ongoing counter-terrorism efforts amid the full-scale invasion. The SBU has recently prevented other attacks, including a thwarted terrorist plot against defense facilities in the Donetsk region and the arrest of a Russian agent in Kyiv who was gathering intelligence for strikes on energy infrastructure.

The arrest in Rivne underscores the SBU's active role in countering terrorist threats, particularly those orchestrated by Russian intelligence. This case highlights Russia's systematic attempts to destabilize Ukraine by using recruited individuals. In the context of the ongoing war, such security operations are critical for protecting civilians and the country's critical infrastructure from covert attacks.
