Ukrainian Security Service Foils FSB Plot, Arrests Agent Targeting Special Ops Commander

Співробітники СБУ запобігли замислу ФСБ, затримавши агента, що планував атакувати командира спецназу.

FSB Agent Apprehended on Ukrainian Soil

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has arrested an agent of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) who was plotting to assassinate a commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Special Operations Forces in Odesa. The arrest was made possible after the agent placed a GPS tracker on the military officer's vehicle, a move that ultimately allowed Ukrainian authorities to prevent the contract killing. This operation highlights the persistent threat of Russian intelligence activities within Ukraine's borders.

The suspect, originally from the Kirovohrad region, had been living in Russia for the past 15 years. According to the investigation, she contacted the Moscow office of Viktor Medvedchuk's political project, 'The Other Ukraine,' seeking legal assistance after being accused of theft. Instead of providing help, representatives of the project handed her over to FSB officers. In exchange for having the theft case against her dropped, the FSB dispatched her to Odesa to prepare the assassination attempt.

Planning and Capture

In Odesa, the agent rented an apartment in the same building as the targeted serviceman and purchased a used car for cover. The GPS tracker she installed under the hood of the Ukrainian soldier's car had been provided to her by the FSB before her entry into Ukraine. Russian intelligence intended to use remote access to this 'beacon' to monitor the soldier's routes and travel patterns. The FSB planned to use this reconnaissance data to eliminate the Ukrainian special forces officer.

The arrest took place immediately after she planted the tracking device. During a search, her smartphone was seized. SBU investigators have served the agent with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which pertains to high treason committed under martial law. An indictment has already been sent to court, and the suspect faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

This incident underscores the ongoing activity of Russian special services in attempts to destabilize Ukraine, utilizing agents to prepare terrorist acts. The successful detention demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukrainian law enforcement in countering national security threats, marking a significant step in countering Russian aggression. Such cases also serve to inform public awareness of the covert dangers that persist amid the ongoing conflict.
