Ukrainian Security Service Detains FSB Agent for Espionage in Kyiv and Kharkiv Regions

Контррозвідка зупинила діяльність агента ФСБ, який збирав інформацію в Київській та Харківській областях.

FSB Agent Apprehended

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a woman acting as an agent for Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). She is suspected of gathering intelligence on Ukrainian military positions in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions and has been formally charged with high treason. According to the SBU's counterintelligence unit, her activities involved collecting the coordinates of Defense Force units and tracking the routes of military supply trains. This arrest highlights the persistent threat of espionage within Ukraine's borders during the ongoing conflict.

The detainee, an unemployed resident of Fastiv in Kyiv Oblast who had relocated from frontline areas of Donetsk, was first recruited by the FSB through an acquaintance living in Russia. Under the guise of visiting relatives in Kyiv and Izyum, she would mark the geolocations of military units and defensive fortifications. She transmitted this intelligence, in the form of markers on Google Maps, to her handlers via the Telegram messaging app.

Law Enforcement Actions and National Security Threats

During a search of her property, law enforcement seized a smartphone containing evidence of her activities. SBU investigators have charged her under Part 2 of Article 111 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, pertaining to state treason committed under martial law. She is currently in custody and faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

In a separate but related operation in the Kyiv region, authorities also neutralized an agent network run by Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). This group was allegedly preparing a series of assassinations targeting Ukrainian military commanders and public figures. The network was coordinated by a career Russian intelligence officer with the call sign "Meteor" and consisted of four recruited individuals, including an active law enforcement officer. The members were detained just prior to their planned assassination of a volunteer formation commander in Kyiv, identified as Serhiy Fitsa, commander of the DTFG Legion D.

These incidents underscore the active efforts of Ukrainian special services to counter hostile agents operating on its territory, particularly during the armed conflict.

The detention of the FSB agent and the dismantling of the GRU network illustrate the severe threats to national security and the critical need for constant vigilance and countermeasures against hostile activities. Such operations are vital for protecting the safety of both military personnel and civilians in Ukraine and can significantly impact the broader regional security situation.

The ongoing threat of espionage in Ukraine is further underscored by recent law enforcement efforts, including the arrest of a drone operator accused of leaking sensitive military information. This case highlights the broader challenges faced by the Security Service of Ukraine in combating treasonous activities.
