NABU Investigator Apprehended
Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) officers have detained a detective from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) at a checkpoint near the city of Sumy. The arrest occurred while the NABU official was carrying out his duties as part of an authorized investigation, prompting outrage from the agency, which labeled the action as baseless. NABU has suggested the detention may be linked to the fact that the employee's parents reside in a temporarily occupied territory. The Bureau also indicated the possible involvement of an SBU unit overseen by the service's First Deputy Head.
Following the detention, NABU emphasized that the detective had undergone all necessary vetting procedures prior to his appointment, including a polygraph test administered by NABU's Internal Control Department.
"It should be noted that before his appointment to NABU, he passed all required checks, including a polygraph test by NABU's Internal Control Department, during which, in particular, questions regarding possible ties or cooperation with representatives of the aggressor state or collaborative structures were verified," NABU stated. This incident highlights the complex and often tense relationship between Ukraine's anti-corruption and state security bodies.
Recent Context of Events
This episode unfolds against the backdrop of the recent arrest of Ruslan Magamedrasulov, the head of one of NABU's territorial detective divisions. On July 21, 2025, the Office of the Prosecutor General and the SBU exposed and detained Magamedrasulov, who coordinates the Bureau's activities in Ukraine's frontline regions from his base in Dnipro. According to law enforcement, he maintained contacts with the Russian Federation and negotiated the sale of industrial hemp. The court ordered him remanded in custody without bail until September 16. Ruslan Magamedrasulov has since given his first interview from the detention center, while NABU Head Semen Kryvonos has refuted information about Magamedrasulov's potential involvement in the case of Timur Mindich.
These events underscore the heightened tensions within Ukraine's anti-corruption sphere and raise questions about the interaction between different law enforcement agencies. The detention of the NABU detective points to potential internal conflicts and risks that can arise in the context of the fight against corruption. It also suggests a need for improved coordination between the SBU and NABU to prevent similar incidents in the future.
