Ukraine Detains Two Russian Agents Accused of Directing Airstrikes on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia

Правоохоронці затримали двох росіян, які підозрюються в організації авіаударів по українських містах.

Russian Operatives Arrested in Ukraine

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has apprehended two individuals working for Russia who were responsible for guiding aerial attacks on the Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. One of the suspects, operating in the capital, monitored the positions of Ukrainian radar stations and surface-to-air missile systems. He would walk through areas near Kyiv and mark the locations of air defense assets on Google Maps.

The second suspect worked as a delivery driver for a postal service in Zaporizhzhia. While delivering packages, he recorded the coordinates and movement patterns of Ukrainian military convoys. Both individuals were recruited locally and are described as ideological supporters of the Russian Federation who passed intelligence on Ukrainian military sites to their handlers.

Evidence Seized and Legal Consequences

During searches, authorities seized smartphones from the suspects containing evidence of their collaboration with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). SBU investigators have charged both men under two articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code: Article 111, Part 2, which covers high treason under martial law, and Article 114-2, Part 3, which penalizes unauthorized disclosure of Ukrainian military positions.

These arrests come amid a broader SBU campaign to root out Russian spies. Recently, the SBU's internal security unit exposed a female major within its own ranks who was leaking the names of Ukrainian operatives to Russia. Additionally, military counterintelligence and the State Bureau of Investigation uncovered a Russian agent working as an inspector for Ukraine's State Border Guard Service. The SBU also prevented a contract killing targeting a Special Operations Forces commander in Odesa.

These incidents underscore the persistent threat posed by Russian intelligence agencies and the critical role of Ukrainian law enforcement in countering it. The detentions highlight the SBU's ongoing efforts to neutralize hostile activities and emphasize the need for constant vigilance and protection of military and strategic sites across Ukraine. As the conflict continues, cooperation among various state bodies remains essential to safeguarding national security.
