Arrest Made in Connection with Terrorist Attack

Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) counterintelligence units, together with the National Police, apprehended two residents of the Lviv region for carrying out a terrorist attack on September 17 near the administrative building of the Stryi District Military Commissariat. The blast seriously wounded a serviceman. The suspects have been charged under Part 2, Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses acts of terrorism committed by a group acting in concert. Investigations are ongoing to clarify all details of the crime and to explore any links to Russian intelligence agencies.

Incident Overview

The attack took place on September 17, 2026, outside the administrative office of the Stryi District Military Commissariat in Lviv region. The suspects, aged 48 and 41, hail from the Mykolaiv district of Lviv oblast. They threw a homemade explosive device onto the military recruitment center's premises. The device detonated during an inspection by a serviceman, causing severe injuries to him.

The perpetrators arrived at the site in their own vehicle, with one individual tossing the bomb through a window onto the parking area. During a search of one suspect’s residence, authorities seized two additional improvised explosive devices. The SBU has classified the explosion as a terrorist act and has launched a criminal investigation. Authorities are also probing the possibility that the suspects collaborated with Russian special services.

The SBU recently exposed a network planning terrorist attacks and contract killings. This case underscores the ongoing serious threats to Ukraine’s national security, demanding continued vigilance from law enforcement agencies.

The detention of these two individuals highlights intensified efforts by Ukrainian law enforcement to combat terrorism and safeguard national security. A key focus of the investigation is uncovering any connections between the suspects and Russian intelligence, which could indicate attempts to destabilize Ukraine. This event illustrates that terrorism remains a pressing challenge within the country, necessitating a firm and proactive response from security forces.

The recent arrest of two suspects in the Lviv region highlights a broader pattern of threats against Ukraine's national security. In a related incident, the Security Service of Ukraine apprehended an individual in the Khmelnytskyi region for collecting target coordinates aimed at the armed forces and government facilities. Such developments underscore the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in countering potential acts of terrorism and espionage.
