Evidence Compiled Against Russian Prison Supervisor
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police have compiled a body of evidence against a Russian prison supervisor involved in the torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The suspect, an inspector from Correctional Colony No. 1 in Russia's Tula region, has been notified of the charges in absentia. Due to procedural restrictions, law enforcement has not publicly released his full name. The alleged crimes took place between May 2022 and February 2023.
Investigators state the suspect used a standard-issue PR-73M rubber baton to strike prisoners on their legs, arms, head, and other body parts. In addition to physical violence, he also employed psychological pressure and threats. The SBU has formally charged him in absentia under an article pertaining to the cruel treatment of prisoners of war, a violation of the laws and customs of war.
Widespread Torture in Kherson
Investigations in Kherson have uncovered approximately 20 detention facilities where Russian forces tortured people. Part of this network was overseen by the head of the occupation administration, Volodymyr Saldo. The torture methods employed were varied and included:
- beatings
- electric shocks
- waterboarding (simulated drowning)
- forcing victims to memorize pro-Russian slogans, poems, and songs
During the occupation, around 400 people disappeared without a trace in Kherson. The SBU has previously detained a guard from one of these Russian torture chambers in occupied Kherson.
The Security Service of Ukraine emphasizes that these acts constitute a gross violation of the provisions of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, dated August 12, 1949. Despite the suspect currently residing in the aggressor country, comprehensive measures are underway to ensure he is held accountable for his actions.
This case underscores the severe human rights abuses occurring during the war and highlights the critical role of international justice in punishing those who commit acts of cruelty.
