'ENIGMA 2.0' Plot Foiled

Ukraine's National Police has announced the disruption of a Russian intelligence operation, codenamed 'ENIGMA 2.0', designed to assassinate prominent Ukrainian media and political figures. This incident highlights the ongoing shadow war being waged by Russian security services against Ukraine. According to the report, Moldovan citizens were recruited by Russian special services to gather intelligence on the targets and plan their elimination.

The operation involved detailed surveillance and planning, focusing on the targets':

  • places of residence;
  • workplaces;
  • daily travel routes;
  • general patterns of movement.

The recruited agents, operating within Ukraine, were also evaluating potential methods for carrying out the murders. They were awaiting final execution orders from their Russian handlers, indicating the plot was in an advanced, actionable stage.

Intended Targets and Objectives

The list of potential victims included:

  • a well-known journalist, listed by Russia as an 'extremist' and wanted by its authorities;
  • a senior manager of a state-owned strategic enterprise;
  • active-duty officers from Ukraine's Defence Intelligence Directorate (GUR);
  • a pro-Ukrainian activist originally from Russia.

The primary goal of these planned assassinations was to destabilize Ukrainian society and sow widespread panic among the population. Such covert operations are a known tactic of hybrid warfare.

The foiling of 'ENIGMA 2.0' demonstrates the persistent efforts of Russian intelligence to influence the situation in Ukraine through terror and destabilization. It underscores the grave threats faced by Ukrainian media and political figures who oppose Russian aggression. Actions of this nature pose serious risks not only to individual safety but also to the overall stability of society.
