Contract Killings Prevented in Ukraine
In a special operation codenamed ENIGMA 2.0, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has disrupted a series of contract killings planned by Russian special services. The SBU detained 10 individuals and seized substantial evidence, including mobile phones, weapons, ammunition, explosives, and correspondence with Russian handlers. This operation highlights the persistent covert threat Ukraine faces from its neighbor.
Assassination Network's Plans
According to information from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, the perpetrators were plotting the murders of journalists, military personnel, and public figures. An organized agent-combat network, operating under the direct control of Russian special services, was uncovered. In preparation for the killings, the group gathered intelligence on potential victims, including their travel routes, residences, and lifestyles. A reward of up to $100,000 was promised for each murder, with the amount depending on the victim's public profile and influence.
Among those targeted for liquidation was Andrii Yusov, the spokesperson for strategic communications at Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence. The organizers hoped these assassinations would cause significant public outcry and create a negative information backdrop. Seven individuals were detained in Ukraine, and three suspects, including the network's organizer and two accomplices, were apprehended in Moldova. Members of the group have been formally notified of suspicion, and requests for pre-trial detention are being prepared. Over 20 searches were conducted across several regions, underscoring the operation's scale.
This operation demonstrates the ongoing activity of Russian special services in carrying out destabilizing actions within Ukraine, particularly within the context of information warfare and threats to public figures. The detention of the network's participants and the exposure of their plans emphasize the critical work of Ukrainian law enforcement in preventing terrorist acts and protecting citizens. The details of the assassination bounties also reveal the serious intent of the perpetrators, which in turn necessitates enhanced security measures across the country.
