SBU Officers Busted Taking $110,000 Bribe: Court Orders Detention for Head of Investigative Unit

Оперативники СБУ затримані під час отримання хабара: суд ухвалив рішення про арешт керівника слідчої групи.

Cases Before the High Anti-Corruption Court

The High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) has ordered a pre-trial detention measure for the head of the investigative department at the SBU office in Poltava Oblast, following a case involving a $110,000 bribe. The HACC judge imposed custody with the option of posting bail set at 5 million hryvnias.

On April 27, law enforcement caught the head of the investigative unit, his subordinate, and a lawyer in the act of receiving an illegal payment. Reports indicate that the SBU officers demanded this sum from a business owner through a lawyer acting as an intermediary. The extortion was tied to an agreement to sign a plea deal in exchange for money. Court materials link the case to the supply of equipment to Russia via shell companies registered in Kazakhstan.

Challenges Within Law Enforcement

Beyond this incident, in 2026, the SBU’s internal security unit notified 81 individuals of suspicion, 20 of whom are SBU officials involved in illegal activities.

“The HACC investigating judge applied a preventive measure of detention with an alternative of 5 million hryvnias in bail to the head of the investigative department of the SBU in Poltava Oblast,”
the announcement stated.

This case highlights the serious challenges facing Ukraine’s law enforcement system, particularly in the fight against corruption. The exposure of high-ranking SBU officers for bribery may point to systemic issues within the law enforcement structure that require urgent action to restore public trust in state institutions.

This recent bribery case is not an isolated incident, as the SBU has been actively addressing corruption within its ranks. In a related report, the agency revealed that 81 individuals have been implicated, including 20 officials, highlighting the systemic issues that continue to plague Ukraine's law enforcement agencies. Such developments underscore the urgent need for reform to restore integrity and public confidence in these institutions.
