Description and History of the Lake

First of all, Shelekhivske Lake is one of the most beautiful and at the same time mysterious bodies of water in the Sumy region, which annually attracts tourists from different parts of Ukraine. Its picturesque shores, clean water, and surrounding forests create a special atmosphere of peace and unity with nature. It is not just a lake for swimming or fishing; it is a place filled with legends and stories that go back several centuries. Here, natural beauty and historical value come together, as the body of water is considered one of the oldest in the region.

Shelekhivske Lake is unique in terms of both nature and cultural heritage. Its area is about 7 hectares, and its depth reaches over 10 meters in places. The lake was formed more than 10,000 years ago as a result of natural processes from the ice age, making it the oldest body of water in Left-Bank Ukraine.

The name of the body of water comes from the Cossack Shelekh, who, according to legend, settled here in the 17th century and founded the settlement. It is believed that he was the first to arrange housing around the lake and attract other settlers.

As a result, the body of water became known among travelers and gradually turned into an important landmark. The lake is surrounded by dense oak and pine forests, and its shores are covered with soft grass and bushes. In warm weather, the lake becomes a recreation center for locals and tourists, while in winter, it is a place for quiet walks and enjoying the scenery.

Infrastructure and Recreation

Certainly, the most important aspect is the infrastructure of this location. Despite its relative remoteness from large cities, Shelekhivske Lake has the necessary conditions for comfortable recreation. There are picnic spots arranged, several swimming areas, and options to set up tents. The lake is especially popular among enthusiasts of "wild" tourism, as it allows one to enjoy nature without unnecessary fuss.

Near the water body, there are a few private estates and small recreation bases where tourists are offered accommodation and meals. For those eager to spend time actively, there is an opportunity to rent a boat or a catamaran. Family outings on weekends are often organized here, as the quietness and clean air contribute to relaxation.

Special attention should be given to the photographs of this place. The reflection of the forest in the clear water creates a fairytale picture, especially at dawn or during sunset. It is no surprise that the lake is often chosen for photo shoots, wedding shoots, and simply romantic walks.
