US Senate approves defense budget of $901 billion: $400 million for support of Ukraine

Сенат США затвердив бюджет на оборону на суму 901 мільярд доларів, зокрема 400 мільйонів доларів на допомогу Україні.

US National Defense Authorization Act for 2026

On December 17, 2025, the American Senate supported the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026, which provides for a defense budget of $901 billion. The bill was voted in favor by 77 senators, while 20 opposed it.

According to the adopted bill, a number of important provisions are included. In particular, the law requires:

  • the transfer to Congress of video recordings of strikes against vessels suspected of drug trafficking;
  • the introduction of a prohibition on reducing the number of American troops in Europe below 76,000 for more than 45 days without NATO approval;
  • the impossibility of transferring the military role of the NATO commander in Europe to another leader.

It is also worth noting that the bill allocates $400 million for the support of the Ukrainian army. This step underscores the US commitment to support Ukraine in its defense efforts.

Impact on International Security

The adoption of this bill demonstrates the consistency of American policy towards strengthening the defense capabilities not only of its own armed forces but also of its allies in Europe and Ukraine. The allocated funds for the support of the Ukrainian army indicate the continuation of military assistance amid the ongoing conflict. This may also affect strategic stability in the region, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the US and its NATO partners. Such decisions can have long-term consequences for international security and the geopolitical situation in the world.
