Senator Mark Kelly's Take on Russian Cosmonauts

Former NASA astronaut and current U.S. Senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly, has shared his perspective on what truly drives Russian cosmonauts. Based on five years of observation, Kelly asserts that their priorities are distinctly different from those of their Western counterparts. He believes the hierarchy looks like this:

  • maintaining an appearance of control,
  • finding someone to blame,
  • stealing,
  • and only then—mission success.
“For them, the main thing is the appearance that they are in charge of something; second, when something suddenly goes wrong, who to shift the blame onto; and third, what to steal today. Only after all that, according to Kelly, did mission success come into play.” – Mark Kelly

Contrast with Western Approaches

Kelly went on to contrast these priorities with those of Western nations, emphasizing that 'in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western countries, it's the exact opposite. There, mission outcome comes first.' This observation highlights deep cultural and managerial differences between the countries involved in space exploration.

It is also worth noting that Kelly stopped using a Tesla vehicle after company founder Elon Musk called him a traitor over his visit to Ukraine. This incident adds another layer to the ongoing discussion about the relationship between Kelly and Musk, underscoring the tension in their interactions.

Kelly's remarks shed light not only on his personal views but also on a broader debate about cultural and governance gaps between Russia and Western nations. These differences can affect international cooperation in the space industry, where joint missions demand aligned approaches and mutual trust. The clash with Elon Musk further illustrates how political and social contexts can influence the commercial decisions of influential figures in today's world.
