Університет Вроцлава відзначив внесок Сергія Жадана, надавши йому почесний ступінь доктора.

Honorary Doctorate from the University of Wrocław

On May 22, writer, musician, and serviceman Serhiy Zhadan was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Wrocław. This prestigious recognition followed a nomination from the Faculty of Neophilology and was approved by the university's senate. A monograph dedicated to Zhadan's literary work was also unveiled during the ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, titled 'The Possibility of Happiness, the Denial of Death,' Zhadan remarked:

“For me, a university is the ideal place to rely on the past and talk about the future without fear of sounding ridiculous.”
— Serhiy Zhadan

These words reflect his deep appreciation for the role of education and culture in shaping society.

Cultural and Literary Contributions

Serhiy Zhadan is widely recognized beyond his literary achievements. In 2015, he won the Angelus Prize for his novel 'Mesopotamia.' However, his prominence has also drawn unwanted attention from occupying authorities. In 2025, Zhadan was placed on a wanted list, accused of involvement in an illegal armed group. Despite this, he remains dedicated to his craft, expressing his passion simply:

“I love my work.”
— Serhiy Zhadan

This honorary degree marks a major milestone in Zhadan’s career, underscoring his contributions to culture and literature. By bestowing this honor, the University of Wrocław has reaffirmed the significance of his work and its impact on contemporary Ukrainian culture.

The award of an honorary doctorate to Serhiy Zhadan highlights international recognition of his literary and cultural contributions, as well as solidarity with Ukrainian artists during challenging times. This event may further strengthen cultural ties between Ukraine and Poland, emphasizing the vital role of education and the arts in building the future. Amid ongoing challenges, Zhadan remains a symbol of resilience and creative spirit for the Ukrainian people.
