Commemorating a Hero on His 33rd Birthday
On 2 August 2023, Ukraine remembers Serhiy Hahikovych Nihoyan, who would have turned 33 that day. A participant in the Revolution of Dignity, he is honored as a Hero of the Heavenly Hundred and was posthumously given the title Hero of Ukraine. The Heavenly Hundred is the name given to the civilians killed during the pro-European Euromaidan protests of 2013–2014. Born on 02.08.1993 in Bereznuvativka, a village that now lies within the Dnipro district of Dnipropetrovsk oblast, Nihoyan died on 22 January 2014 in Kyiv and was buried in his home village.
His Life and Deeds
Nihoyan grew up in a family of Armenian refugees who had settled in Ukraine to escape the Nagorno-Karabakh war. He finished the eleventh grade at Bereznuvativka's secondary school—now a gymnasium—in 2011, and then enrolled in the Dniprodzerzhynsk College of Physical Education, a city today called Kamianske. A skilled karateka, he won third place at the 2012 Dniprodzerzhynsk city championship in Kyokushin karate. In 2013 he left school and took up seasonal work in Crimea.
From 8 December 2013, Nihoyan was an active participant in the peaceful protests of the Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv. Following his death, his devotion and heroism led to his recognition as a Hero of the Heavenly Hundred and posthumously as a Hero of Ukraine.
